Midwinter!

It has finally happened! The first half of the year is over, and the 2nd half is well on its way. The galley staff did it’s usual amazing job, and the place never looked better. We stuffed ourselves with appetizers and cocktails, followed up by the main course of lobster and beef. After dinner the band played (with their third name of the season), and the party just kept on going. The next day those who weren’t too hungover went out for a "bbq" outside, and then ended the weekend with the traditional midwinter showing of "The Shining". Next week…4th of July celebrations! By the way, I’m in the left hand side of the group picture wearing a clown wig. It seemed like a good idea at the time…..

Come on down!

No-talent show

What a weekend! Saturday night we had a no-talent show that was part of the station’s way of saying "Thanks" to the galley staff for doing their job every day. Suprisingly, there was a lot of hidden talent among the people down here. Highlights included a bunch of singers, a puppet show featuring the galley employees as characters, and my fantastic rendition of the worst poetry in the world. Sarah, my co-worker, found a book that has a collection of some of worst examples of poetry in the English language. The original plan was for a bunch of people to read a poem between other acts, but that fell apart at the last minute. Instead, I picked a few of my favorites, and proceeded to treat the station to such delights as "Ode to a 10 Pound Cheese", "The Collapse of the Bridge over the River Tae", and the classic "Ode to the Humble Potato". I made it almost half way thru the potato poem before I finally had to give up due to the large number of paper airplanes, bits of food, and a beer can or two that somehow found their way in the air heading towards me. Puzzling!

This morning we finally hit the magic number of -100 degrees F. Unfortunately it wasn’t very long, and it was early in the morning, so only a few people ended up doing the 300 club. I briefly considered it, and then decided there was no way I was running around outside naked before my first cup of coffee. By the time I was properly caffinated, the temp had gone back up to -98 or so. We haven’t even hit the coldest months yet, so I’m not worried about having another chance to do this again.

Here’s a couple of shots from the weekend and this morning
