I’ve now been in Austin for three days, and every one has been fantastic. The first night I got here, a bunch of my old friends met me at a new bar, and then we went out country dancing. I can’t even tell you when we got home..I was just very glad I didn’t have to work the next day like all of those poor people!
Last night I ended up chatting with a buddy from an old company where I worked. He’d finished his year around the world about six months ago, so we wanted to swap traveling stories. We chatted for a bit, then headed downtown to see Zigenfest…Roger Crager was playing on the street, so we headed up to Iron Cactus to watch from their balcony. After he finished around midnight, Ted and I headed to a couple of bars to listen to some blues.
My craving for Chile Reanos was also satisfied today with lunch at Chuys. Tonight is Halloween, so there are bunch of us going out. I’m going as a perverted priest again…..Normally I prefer to have a different costume this year, but on short notice it was easy to throw together. I’ve got a disposable camera, and I’ll be taking plenty of pictures. If last nights preshow is any indication, this should be a great evening!

Getting here took longer than I thought it would…I missed the train by about 3 minutes, and had to wait for the next one. That one ended up being about an hour late, so I finally arrived in Florence about 3.5 hours later than I had expected. Luckily I found a GREAT hostel, and had time to go out and see Michaelangelo’s David. I had honestly thought about skipping this, but I am so glad I didn’t. I had no idea of the actual size of this sculpture. Every picture I have seen doesn’t do anything to show the scale of the statue. I figured that it would be about life size, or maybe a little larger….WRONG! This thing is about 3 times life size, and up on a pedestal that adds another 10 feet or so to its size. They’ve just started a restoration project to clean it, but they’re doing it in full view. That’s the way art should be saved!
